How to Keep Kids Safe on Facebook without Spying on Them

The internet certainly added an extra level of complications to an already complicated parent-child privacy agreement act. As children get older, they will expect, even demand, that they be given privacy, and because communication lines are more often now, it only means that privacy has taken the all new meaning altogether.

kids on FacebookTake for example, Facebook. Your child may shout out to the whole world that she is having a terribly bad day in school, but she would not want to tell you about it. It’s complicated, right? You’re lucky if you are one of your teenage daughter’s friends, because you will learn from it from her update, and you can talk to her about it, but if you are not, then you’d need to find other ways to be able to connect to her. Creating an anonymous account and befriending her wouldn’t work, either, because the repercussions are so great if she discovers what you’re up to.

The GoGoStat Parental Guidance is an application that lets you monitor your child at a certain level, with her permission, of course. It will ask the child for confirmation of your relationship, and permission for you to have an arm’s length type of monitoring. This program only has an alerts for bad words, when your child is divulging too much info such as address, telephone number, photos and new friends. Other than that the parent is virtually invisible. You should talk about this program to your child to let her know that what you are after is her welfare alone.

Of course, you will not need this if you and your child has a very healthy relationship which earns you the status of a “friend”.
