Sadly, our mental being is negatively impacted each time we compromise our values. It’s quite a tricky chain – once you compromise the first time. You would start having difficulty in resisting compromise subsequently. On the other hand, standing for our values regardless of the situation impacts our lives positively.
These and similar situations can push people to compromise their stand.
Often, the situations that stare over our face would almost compel us to compromise our values. It may come in a form of the juicy job offers by a company without integrity. It could also come in the form of beliefs that may end up separating you from your friend or loved one. It could also be that your boss is pushing you to a compromising situation – since you wouldn’t risk your job, you are afraid of ‘rocking the boat’.
Valuing Oneself
I guess you would not want to respect anyone who followed a popular opinion, or compromised his values just to please others. And I guess you would respect those who go out of their way to stand for what they believe, regardless of the inconveniences (especially when such values are rooted in ethical principles). This also applies to the way you perceive yourself. Your self-respect would soar when you refuse to give in to popular beliefs and stick to your own values.
Identity Maintenance
Our identity tends to disappear into the thin air so fast when we start giving in to opinions of others – it doesn’t matter whether the opinion is right or wrong. Also, don’t make yourself a free thinker, or you become a person without your own mind. On the other hand, it pays more to be authentic and firm with your viewpoints.
Self-Confidence
Your self-confidence is tarnished when you tend to dance to the tune that others are dictating for you. It is the fastest way to lose and distrust your own instincts. Before long, you will be trapped in-between believing what others want you to believe and what you really hold on to. At first, it may appear difficult, but the reward of standing up to what you believe is fortified self-confidence. You become more confident and take better decisions when you heed to your own intuition rather than what the crowd tells you.
