Just 10% of US states have legalized same-sex marriage to date – Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the federal district of Washington D.C.
Same-sex marriage still competes to be one of the countries most neglected civil rights issues. At times it can be difficult to view our land as democratic when still such a large percent of our population fails to have the rights they deserve. I find it almost embarrassing that the land of dreams, the land that publicizes itself as a world leader consistently fails in civil and human rights – seemingly brushing them under the rug and offering no solution.
Just who or what is getting in the way of lifting the ban on gay marriage? Is it the Catholic Church, the right-wing religions or the Republicans? Is it just those who are too deeply set in their ways and arrogant to accept or even tolerate the need for same-sex marriage?
It isn’t just the action of marriage that they are denied but the standard benefits and recognition of a couple that support one another through various issues and yet still face the feeling of being outsiders in their own towns and villages. Why do gay and lesbian couples who are as human as anyone, still have to feel alienated?
If we preach equality to all citizens then it is about time we practice that what we preach or what do you think? I hope that our miserable 10% will soon start to blossom into a wholesome 100% and that gays and lesbians become the same rights as every other human.
